Look how large the "machine final limit" or "machine stop switch" contacts are...
Some authorities required that "the main-line circuit to the driving-machine motor
and the circuit of the driving-machine brake coil...be directly opened" by this switch.

An interesting roping arrangement here...is there a rope missing from the drum?
Looks like there are four ropes connecting the car to the counterweight.
Look at the length of the gear case...is this a tandem wormgear arrangement?
