car at the landing during loading and unloading?
Perhaps the 'handle' at C would set/release these dogs?

Several interesting points here:
The suspension ropes have been removed...
We have a clear view of the wood guides...
The top landing gate looks quite short due to the limited amount
of overhead space - which was permissible in the 'old' days...
...and there's a big hole in the machine room floor!

You can see balance weights in the tray on this hand powered man platform...
Pull up on that stationary manila rope to go down and down to go up.
The counterweight might be enclosed in that box behind the right guide.
