A17.3-2005 SAFETY CODE FOR EXISTING ELEVATORS AND ESCALATORS
Windows in Hoistway Enclosures - "Exterior hoistway windows shall be
identified with 4 in. (102 mm) high letters marked “ELEVATOR.”
Why? To alert firefighters' that this is a hoistway not a window to a room.
