An overspeed valve (safety valve or rupture valve) can be seen
between the pit shutoff valve and the cylinder.

Somewhere in Brazil...where they have many shutoff valves and few buffers.
Note the sheave in the corner of the pit...?
Jerry Follen informs me that the strainer is also installed upside-down...

The sign on the 4 X 4 reads "MECHANICAL PROP"...
This looks like a roped hydraulic with a weighted governor in the pit.

10 to 1 this guy is not an elevator technician...why?
1 - Stepladder in pit - why not use the ladder provided?
2 - Caution tape across entrance opening - we are not policemen.
3 - Board used to hold hoistway doors open - needlenose pliers fit in my pocket...not a board.
4 - Sign on corridor button - if we had to depend on people not pressing a button...
you would not be reading this now because I would have died many years ago!
My guess...he's a plumber fixing the sprinkler system.
At least from this angle he doesn't seem to need any Plumbers Butt Caulk!
